The preliminary report revealed that the girl was allegedly raped and was pregnant for 8 to 10 weeks. Further examination is going on to know whether the hanging was antemortem or postmortem.

The minor girl was from a tribal community of Ranishwar, 40 km from the town, who used to live with her aunt in the village and worked as a labourer. She met the accused Armaan Ansari who is also a construction worker, at the same workplace.

She came into relationship with Armaan Ansari and was sexually exploited by the accused on the pretext of marriage. When the girl found out that she was pregnant, she asked the accused to marry her. But the accused killed her instead.

Armaan Ansari has been arrested by the police and charged under IPC sections 376 (rape), 302 (murder) and provisions of the SC/ST Act and POCSO Act.

The mother of the tribal girl from Dumka said that her daughter was raped, killed and hanged from the tree by the accused who works as a construction worker. The girl was allegedly sexually exploited by the accused on the pretext of marriage.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Sudarshan Mandal told the media ‘The girl was allegedly raped and murdered. The accused, Arman Ansari, has been arrested.’

This incident follows one on August 23, when a man allegedly poured petrol on a 16-year-old girl from outside the window of her room when she was sleeping, and set her on fire. The teenager, who reportedly had spurned his advances, died of the injuries on August 28. That same day, a 15-year-old tribal girl was raped allegedly by a 26-year-old man after barging into her house in Ranchi. Accused in both cases were arrested.

The people of Dumka district are in outrage due to back-to-back such incidents. The CM of Jharkhand Shri Hemant Soren is being targeted by the opposition for not paying attention to such incidents.

After the news about this incident he tweeted “I am deeply saddened by the incident in Dumka. In the said case, the accused has been arrested and I have directed Dumka Police to take strict legal steps to ensure justice. May God give peace to the departed daughter and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this critical time.”

The Leader of Opposition in Jharkhand assembly, Babulal Marandi, also tweeted “This news from Dumka is going to boil your blood. It is alleged that this tribal girl was hanged on a tree after being raped by a youth named Arman Ansari yesterday. Arman is arrested. And how many tribal girls will be the victims of such scoundrels in Jharkhand?”

BJP leader Louis Marandi told the media “We have asked the administration to investigate the case thoroughly. If not, the probe should be handed over to the CBI or the NIA. We will go from village to village to form a women’s organization if justice is not done. We will protect our women.”

When the media sought Soren’s reaction to the Dumka incident, he downplayed it and insensitively said, “Yeh sab to hota rehta hai (such incidents keep happening)” . This statement of the CM has again led him in heated political controversies. Also, it is worth mentioning that the chief minister has not so far visited Dumka where the twin horrors against minors were reported.

Meanwhile, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson Priyank Kanoongo will visit Dumka on Monday (5 September 2022) and meet the victim’s family and other officials.
