It’s worse being a victim to a crime and its even hard to get out of a trauma of such incident. Though crimes can be small and harsher and the trauma depending on crime takes time getting out of.

Though there are a lot of crimes taking place in a day in every country, some stands out among others either due to the nature of crime or the influence of the victim in the society.

This causes some cases to be highlighted among thousands of cases. Here, in this article, I have highlighted 12 of such cases in India throughout the year 2022 that shocked the world.

12 Crimes That Shocked Society in 2022

1. Sidhu Moosewala Murder Case

Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu (28 years old), popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala, was a Punjabi singer and politician who got murdered on May 29th at Mansa district of Punjab.

The incident took place a day after his security was withdrawn by the Punjab Police among 424 others, whose police security was reduced or entirely removed the day before, in preparation for the anniversary of Operation Blue Star, leaving him with two commandos only, as compared to four earlier.

The Punjab police arrested six sharpshooters in the case who lodged 25 shots in Moosewala’s body, killing him in 15 minutes. The alleged murderers are said to belong to Bishnoi’s gang whose leader is the notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

Canada-based Goldy Brar, who has been part of the same gang as Bishnoi, had claimed the responsibility for Moosewala’s murder.

2. Udaipur Tailor Murder

On June 28, a tailor named Kanhaiya Lal was killed brutally with a cleaver inside his tailoring shop.

Two men named Riyaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad went to the Kanhaiya’s shop as customers. When he went near one of the two to take the measurements they beheaded him with the cleaver and the other recorded the whole gruesome act in his phone. They posted the videos online that said they are avenging an insult to Islam.

The autopsy report of Kanhaiya revealed that he was stabbed 26 times, with 10 stab wounds in the neck which lead to his death due to excess blood loss.

The two accused tried to flee but were caught by the Rajasthan police. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed the case against the two under the charges of conspired and planned heinous murder.

The two men allegedly posted the content in support of suspended Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nupur Sharma, that sparked public outrage across the country.

3. The Serial Killer Couple

In June 2022, Karnataka Police found severed body parts of two women near water canals. Only the lower bodies of the women were found, with the upper body missing. Since the two bodies were found 25 km from each other, the police concluded that the bodies are linked to each other.

The investigations and the tracking of victim’s phone led the police to reach the killers- T Siddalingappa and his girlfriend Chandrakala. Both of them confessed that they invited the victims to their house and had killed them.

T Siddalingappa told the police that he killed three women and was planning to kill five more. He said that he killed them to avenge his girlfriend Chandrakala, who claimed that the slain victims had pushed her into prostitution. Reports say the couple also robbed the victims.

4. Bilkis Bano Case

Bilkis Bano is the victim of communal riots of 2002 Godhra kand where she was gangraped by 3 men and 14 members of her family were raped, molested and hacked to death by the mob.

Out of 20 accused, 13 were proved guilty in 2007. Then in 2017, 11 out of 13 guilty were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Bombay High Court.

But on this Independence Day, all the 11 convicts were released by the Gujarat government after one of them had filed a remission plea in the Supreme Court on April 1st, 2022. The decision of releasing the convicts had left the nation with an outrage as they were welcomed by garlands and sweets like heroes. 

The Supreme court issued a notice to the Gujarat government regarding the remission of convicts of the heinous crime.

5. Dumka Murder case

Ankita Singh, a 17 years old 12th standard student was murdered by an alleged muslim stalker on 23rd August 2022 in the Dumka district of Jharkhand.

She was burnt alive by the stalker Shahrukh Hussain, who poured petrol from the window on Ankita while she was sleeping in her bedroom. She was taken to the hospital shortly after the incident and on August 28th, she succumbed to her burn injuries.

The accused Shahrukh Hussain was living at the place where Ankita used to live and used to follow and tease her while going and coming back to school. He wanted her to marry him and adopt Islam but Ankita refused to do so. She complained to her father who assured her to look into the matter.

But before he could do anything Shahrukh commenced the heinous crime. The police arrested Shahrukh and his accomplice Naeem alias Chhotu Khan for the crime.

6. Sonali Phogat Murder Case

Sonali Phogat (42 years old) was a famous Indian actor and well known BJP leader, who was pronounced dead on 23rd August at St. Anthony Hospital in Anjuna, North Goa. Initially it was considered a natural death but Phogat’s family complained that it was a planned murder.

The Goa police investigated the case and got the leads in the directions of a planned homicide. The police arrested Sudhir Sangwan and Sukhwinder Wasi, who were also the personal assistants of Phogat. The case has also shown the involvement of illegal drugs, which led to the death of Phogat.  

The Goa police arrested three people under the NDPS Act which includes the owner of the ‘Curlies’ restaurant Edwin Nunes and two drug peddlers- Rama Mandrekar and Dattaprasad Gaonkar.

On September 9, the Supreme Court ordered the demolition of ‘Curlies’ restaurant located at Anjuna beach, Goa. Names of few political leaders have also been put forward in the case. The investigation is still in progress.

7. UP Dalit Sisters Death

On 14th September, the dead bodies of two minor sisters 15 and 17 years old, belonging to the scheduled caste community, were found hanging on a tree in Lalpur Majra Tamoli Purva village of Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh.

The family members of the girls alleged that both of them were abducted, raped and then killed. The next day six men were arrested by the UP police, namely- Junaid, Sohail, Hafizur Rehman, Karimuddin, Arif and Chottu. Junaid and Sohail, were the two who killed the girls.

The police disclosed that Junaid and Sohail were allegedly in relationship with the two girls. Both the accused confessed that they persuaded the girls to meet them at the sugarcane field, where they raped the girls and strangulated them to death.

The two then called the other members and hanged the girls to the tree in order to show that it was a suicide case. The deaths sparked a global outrage, re-igniting a debate in India on the safety of its women.  

8. Ankita Bhandari Case

Ankita Bhandari, a 19 years old girl working as a receptionist at a resort in Rishikesh. Suddenly she went missing and a complaint was lodged in the police. After six days her lifeless decomposed body was found at Chilla canal in Rishikesh on 24th September.

The police investigation revealed that the resort, where Ankita was working belonged to an expelled BJP leader’s son Pulkit Arya. Along with Pulkit two more accused- Ankit Gupta and Saurabh Bhaskar, were also arrested in the case. It has been alleged that the three accused first murdered Ankita and then pushed her off the cliff to Chilla Canal.

The reason(s) of the murder are not clear yet. One of the Ankita’s friend had told the investigators that before her death she once told that she was “pressured to provide special services to a VIP guest“. The case is still under investigation to find answers to many questions related to it.

9. Kerala Human Sacrifice Case

On 11th October 2022, the Kerala police unravelled a case in which two women were abducted, beheaded, their bodies chopped into parts and buried as part of a human sacrifice ritual in the Pathanamthitta district.

The police arrested three accused- Mohammad Shafi, Bhagaval Singh, and his wife Laila for performing the horrific act. When interrogated, Bhagaval Singh and his wife Laila confessed that they murdered the two women as a human sacrifice ritual for financial gains.  

Mohammad Shafi was the mastermind in the Kerala “human sacrifice” case who posed as a woman on social media and befriended accused Bhagaval Singh. Then he masqueraded as a holy man and offered to conduct pujas and rituals to rid the couple of misfortune and lead them to financial prosperity.

Mohammad Shafi used to lure his victims by offering them money and then the couple used to kill them. The three are in the custody of police for further interrogation and investigations of the heinous crime.

10. Shraddha Walkar Murder Case

Shraddha Walkar was a 26 year old woman who was brutally murdered by her 28 years old live-in partner Aaftab Poonawala in Delhi.

This is one of the most brutal and chilling murder case, where Aaftab first strangled Shraddha and then chopped her body into 35 pieces. He kept the pieces in his refrigerator and then dumped them at various places in Mehrauli forest of Delhi for 18 days.

The matter came to light on November 8 when the victim’s father along with a police team from Palghar, Maharashtra, came to the Mehrauli police station to register a missing complaint. The investigations led the police to Aaftab, who confessed of killing Shraddha in May.

The police recovered several bones from the dumped places told by Aaftab. The DNA of the bones when matched with the DNA of Shraddha’s father, it confirmed that the bones belonged to Shraddha.

In the interrogations, Aaftab confessed that he in the heat of rage killed Shraddha. He had been lodged in Tihar jail, however he had pleaded for bail in Delhi’s Saket court.

11. Chandigarh University MMS leakage Case

The Chandigarh University MMS leakage case made the nation to think about the safety of their daughters at an institutional campus. According to the case video of nearly 60 students while having their baths at the University hostel were recorded and leaked.

A massive protest erupted at the University crying for justice over alleged leaked objectionable videos of female students from the hostel. The investigations revealed that the main culprit of the leakage was one of the female students of the university and her boyfriend who is an army personnel.

Further it has been found that the Army man befriended the accused girl through a dating app and convinced her to send personal pictures and videos. However, the investigation found that the accused female student had shared only her personal videos and not of other girls. The Army man has been arrested by the police along with two other men from Shimla.

12. Aayushi Yadav Murder Case

Aayushi Yadav, a 21 years old girl was murdered by her father in the name of “honour”.

Aayushi had married a boy of her choice, that made her parents unhappy. On November 17th, Aayushi had a fight with her father because of the marriage and out of rage her father shot her twice after the argument. The same night both her parents packed her lifeless body into a suitcase and dumped it near Yamuna Expressway in Mathura.

The accused parents has been arrested by the police along with the murder weapon from their house at Modband village in Delhi’s Badarpur. It has also been reported that Aayushi’s brother was also aware of the crime.
