Shiv Sena Leader Sudhir Suri Shot Dead During Protests
Punjab's Famous Leader Sudhir Suri Shot Dead while Protesting

Sudhir Suri, a Hindutva right wing leader in Punjab, was shot dead on a busy street in Amritsar on Friday afternoon in an attack that was caught on camera while there were over a dozen cops around him.

Mr. Suri was a leader of a local outfit that uses the name Shiv Sena Taksali and was holding a protest outside a temple against its management when at least five shots were fired from a pistol.

Mr. Suri, who wasn’t an electoral player, was mostly known for his fiery and allegedly communal video messages on social media targeting some Sikh outfits and Khalistan supporters in particular.

Due to threats from gangsters and Khalistani extremists, Mr. Suri had police protection, yet the attacker Sandeep Singh, who has been arrested was successful in landing at least two shots that led to his death. There were also local cops deployed at the spot.

When he was shot, he was on a dharna on the street, sitting next to an associate who was seen firing back at the attacker from a revolver.

The city police commissioner, Arun Pal Singh told the accused was arrested immediately and weapon seized and further investigation is on. He has also appealed to the people to keep calm and not give in to any communal calls.

The accused Sandeep Singh (31 years old) was arrested and the .32 bore licensed weapon used in the commission of the crime was seized. He owns a garment shop near the protest site.

He was presented before the court amid tight security and had been sent to seven-day police remand on Saturday.

Meanwhile Canada-based gangster Lakhbir Singh Landa has taken the responsibility for the broad daylight murder of the Shiv Sena leader. He claimed responsibility in a social media post.

Though the police officials were tightlipped over any development in the case, a police official said they were checking the authenticity of the social media post.

Punjab BJP chief Ashwani Sharma reacted to the incident and said, “The law and order situation has completely broken down in the state.”

State Congress chief Amarinder Singh ‘Raja’ Warring tweeted: “Law and order is deteriorating and going from bad to worse. Congress condemns murderous attack on Shiv Sena leader in Amritsar. Political differences apart, violence is unacceptable. Culprits must be brought to book.”
