On Friday, Kanpur police arrested self-proclaimed baba after his wife filed a complaint about harassing her. The victim was the fifth wife of the accused. He married her without giving a divorce to his earlier wives.
The accused, identified as Anuj Chetan Katheria of Shahjahanpur, was planning to marry for the sixth.
DCP South Kanpur Police Raveena Tyagi said Anuj Katheria, a self-proclaimed ‘baba’, was arrested on his wife’s complaint. “She alleged that Anuj was married to five women and was going to tie the knot for the sixth time. The accused was arrested on Friday,” the police officer said.
“He had not told his fifth wife about his other marriages. After a few days of their wedding, he started harassing her, and she filed a complaint at Chakeri police station last year. And since Anuj lived in Kidwai Nagar police station area, the woman filed a case at the respective police station last month,” police said.
Police in their investigation found that he used to approach women through matrimonial sites by the name of lucky Pandey. He would introduce himself as a government teacher or a businessman, a tantric, or a cleric.
After contacting women, he would call them to an ashram where he performed “tantra-mantra”. He was in touch with 32 other women on the matrimonial sites, said police.
He is booked under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code. Anuj was also arrested in 2016 in connection with the rape of his brother’s wife.
Anuj married for the first time in 2005, his divorce case with his first wife is pending in court. In 2010 he married a resident of Bareilly for the second time.
Four years later, he married a woman from Auraiya district. And then he married his third wife’s cousin, who allegedly died by suicide after she learned the truth about his previous marriages. In 2019, Anuj married for the fifth time, said police.
