Mehul choksi arrested in Dominica might be handed over to India

Dominica may hand over Mehul Choksi to India, Choksi was arrested in Dominica after he has gone missing in Antigua and Barbuda. Prime Minister Baston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda has asked Dominica to directly hand over Mehul Choksi to India.

Mr. Browne told local media that he has given “clear instructions” to the Dominican authorities to repatriate Choksi to India. Mr. Browne told news agencies that Mehul Choksi will not have safeguard which he enjoys for being a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda. 

Mehul Choksi’s lawyer while responding to speeches of the Antigua prime minister, said he is no longer a citizen of India and can only be sent back to Antigua.

The 62-year-old Choksi had gone missing earlier this week from the Caribbean island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, where he fled in 2018. Reports late Wednesday said he had been arrested in Dominica.

Mehul Choksi is a citizen of Antigua since 2107, he is staying in Antigua since 2018. Antigua issued a yellow notice and subsequently he was arrested. A Yellow Notice is issued by Interpol to track missing persons.

Choksi is on the wanted list of the Indian government for fraud committed by him in the Punjab national bank, he had committed a scam of ₹13,500 crores along with Nirav Modi.

Nirav Modi is currently facing trial in the United Kingdom and is under the custody of UK police. Trail court of the UK has rejected several bail applications filed by Nirav Modi.

The Indian government said that, “India is trying to use its diplomatic relations with other countries to bring him back. Sources in the home ministry said India enjoys good ties with Dominica, pointing out that the government recently sent one lakh Covid vaccines free of cost to the tiny Caribbean island as part of its ‘Vaccine Maitri’ initiative.”

Responding to the opposition, Prime Minister Browne had said his dispensation was “collaborating” with the Indian government, neighboring countries, and international police organizations to try and locate him
