In Odisha’s Balangir district, a man was brutally thrashed and forced to drink urine on suspicion of practising sorcery.
The incident took place on July 3, in the Paruabhadi village under Sindhekela police limits in Odisha’s Bolangir district. The incident, however, came to the public eye after a video went viral on social media.
As per police reports, several people in the village started getting sick due to unknown reasons. The people started suspecting Hadibandhu Bagarti because of his sorcery practices.
Seeing the rising agitation against Hadibandhu, the elders of the village held a meeting and decided to punish the victim.
On July 3, a group of villagers armed with sticks went to Bagarti’s house, dragged him out, and thrashed him mercilessly in front of the public.
After getting the incident information, police immediately reached the spot and shifted the victim to a nearby hospital.
Balangir Police SP Nitin Kushalkar told India Today, “Three people have been arrested, they were charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.”
Mammoth Bagarti, the family member of the victim, told India Today TV, “They dragged my brother out of our house and thrashed him badly, they forced him to drink urine and eat excreta. I have named all those who thrashed him in the FIR.”
Seema, another relative of the victim, said, “Instead of detaining those who thrashed him and taking him (the victim) to the hospital, the police detained both including the victim. Later they took the victim to the hospital for treatment after we pleaded for medical care.“
