Lingayat Seer Suicide Case

Kanchugal Bandemutt seer Basavalingeshwara Swamy, 44 years old, was found hanging in his room on October 24 in the mutt located in Magadi taluk of Ramanagara district, 50 km from Bengaluru.

Karnataka police have arrested three persons, including a 21-year-old woman and a seer, in connection with the suicide case.

As the case took many twists and turns, the police sources on Sunday explained that they have collected more than 20 video clippings of the seer and the woman who was used to honey trap him.

The arrested persons Mrityunjaya Swamiji of Kannuru Math; Neelambike aka Chanda from Doddaballapur; and Mahadevaiah, an advocate from Tumakurur, have confessed to the crime and told the police that they had a deep hatred for the deceased seer and wanted to dethrone him.

According to the police, Mrityunjaya Swamiji was eying on the throne of the cash rich Kanchugal Bade Math which had a large following of devotees, owned more than 80 acres of land near Bengaluru, reserved funds and ran a number of education institutions.

Mrityunjaya Swamiji, a cousin of deceased seer, was dependent on Siddaganga Math of Tumakuru for funds to manage the show.

The police said, Mrityunjaya Swamiji nursed a deep grudge against the deceased seer for complaining against him to the Siddaganga.

Neelambike had a good rapport with seers of Lingayat Maths, including the victim. She was angry at him as he recorded her conversation bad mouthing other seers and sent the audio clip to those swamijis.

Advocate Mahadevaiah also joined hands with the two and hatched a conspiracy eight months ago.

A senior officer said that even though the purported three-page suicide note written by the deceased had mentioned several names, police arrested the woman who was behind the video chat and based on the information provided by her, two more arrests were made.

It had been informed that the Swami had detailed in the note that “an unidentified woman allegedly kept calling him frequently to gain his confidence. She used to get ₹500, ₹1000 from him claiming to be poor. Then she recorded a video chat without him knowing.”

The suicide letter also mentioned that he did not do anything wrong but won’t live with taints, as he has never done anything wrong in his 25 years of service… hence took the extreme step unwillingly.

The note also said that All India Veerashaiva Lingayat association Vice-President TS Sachidananda Murthy had circulated the videos to desecrate him.

The Kudur police had booked the three accused on Sunday under the Indian Penal Code Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 (conspiracy).

A police officer said that they are yet to question the persons whose name has been mentioned in the suicide note by the seer.
