Delhi police have arrested a 48-year-old Maulvi on Monday for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl inside a mosque in northeast Delhi.
“We registered an FIR after receiving a complaint and arrested the accused. Further investigation is in progress, and we aim to file a charge sheet soon for speedy justice,” a senior police official said.
The police officer further said the girl had alleged that the incident took place when she went inside the mosque to fetch water around 10 pm on Sunday.
The girl said she was stopped by the cleric, who raped her. The victim then returned to her house and narrated the incident to his parents. After some time, both parents and girl approached the local police station.
Delhi Police said the Agitated locals gathered outside the mosque after hearing the news for protest. Still, police personnel were deployed in time outside the mosque to protect against any violence.
The accused Maulvi ilyas was booked under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) act. He was arrested in Ghaziabad.
The accused was produced in a city court, which sent him to 14-day judicial custody.
