On Monday over four kilograms of contraband brown sugar was destroyed by the Special Task Force(STF) of Odisha Police at a designated incinerator.
The designated incinerator used for the destruction belonged to Sani Clean Pvt. Ltd. Tangiapada, Khorda.
According to the officials, the seized drugs were first authenticated and certificated by a concerned court and handed over to the Drug disposal committee for the disposal.
In the recent years during the massive campaign against narcotics especially ganja and Brown sugar (also known as Heroin/ smack) by Odisha police, there has been huge piling up of seized narcotic drugs. .
As the trial of narcotics cases takes time, these seized drugs remain stocked at police stations exposed to all kinds of vulnerabilities. However, because of some procedural and technical issues, seized drugs could not be disposed of.
The STF sources explained that they had approached the Odisha High Court with a prayer to resolve the issues on hindrances involved in disposing of the huge seized drugs
The High Court in January had last passed a landmark judgement directing the subordinate courts to dispose of the piling of the contraband and issued a detailed Standard Operating Procedure(SOP) in this regard.
The High Court directed the Subordinate courts to dispose of the applications filed Under Sec. 52A of NDPS Act, 1985. This section provides for disposal of all seized drugs and psychotropic substances having regard to the hazardous nature, vulnerability to theft, substitution, constraints of proper storage space soon after their seizure following due procedure of law.
The Drug disposal committee was led by STF SP Bhubaneswar, Deputy Collector, Khorda, Superintendent of Excise, Khorda, DSP, STF in presence of Scientific Officers of State Forensic Science laboratory and Member of State Pollution Board.
It has been reported that till date STF has destroyed/disposed of 12 kg 815 gm brown sugar including today’s destruction in 10 cases and 16 Quintals Ganja in 04 cases.
